UArctic, having been established by the Arctic Council, is an instrument for its members to be part of the greater process of Arctic development and protection.

The Arctic Council promotes cooperation among the Arctic States and Indigenous Peoples, and works to protect the Arctic environment and supports sustainable development in the region. In order to meet all aspects of their objectives, environmental perspectives are taken into account when meetings are organised.

During Finland's chairmanship of the Arctic Council (2017-2019), the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs in cooperation with WWF Finland have developed guidelines on how to arrange environmentally sustainable meetings. The MFA and WWF guidelines factsheet is available in English and Finnish.

As an integral part of Finland’s Arctic Council chairmanship program, the UArctic Congress 2018 will follow these guidelines, where environmentally friendly choices can be seen especially in catering, purchases and planning of informal events and programmes.
