Welcome to Helsinki

Helsinki is a smart, safe and compact city, where modern urban life meets a beautiful diverse environment.

We want Helsinki to be an open city that works together with others. Our aim is to create the most progressive everyday life in the world and focus on finding solutions to global challenges together with our citizens. Helsinki’s competitive advantage is being a forerunner in user-inspired design and the use of open data. Pioneering experiments within digital innovations combined with our world-class university ecosystem creates an exceptional platform for research and business.

Arctic expertise comes natural to Helsinki, lying at the crossroads between the warm currents of the Gulfstream and polar fronts from the North. As an ever-greater share of the world’s population live in cities, more and more of the keys to solving global problems are also in city halls. Helsinki is firmly committed to be in the forefront of building a more sustainable world.

Cities can contribute in numerous ways. For instance, Helsinki has set as its climate objective to become carbon neutral by 2035. The greatest potential, nevertheless, lies in what we can achieve by bringing together our ecosystem in technology, research and business.

To give you one example: the University of Helsinki is a world leader in atmospheric science. Their research will help us understand mechanisms between processes in the atmosphere and changing climate, enabling us to focus on the most relevant mitigation actions.

We warmly welcome the international scientific community to discuss global challenges in our beautiful city during the UArctic Congress 2018!
