University of Southern Denmark

The University of Southern Denmark welcomed the first students onto the campus in Odense in September 1966, and things have been developing by leaps and bounds ever since. We now have five faculties with more than 27,000 students, almost 20% of whom are from abroad, and more than 3,800 employees distributed across our main campus in Odense and regional campuses in Slagelse, Kolding, Esbjerg and Sønderborg. Several international studies document that we conduct world-class research and are one of the top fifty young universities in the world. With around 115 different study programmes in the fields of the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, health sciences and engineering, graduates of the University of Southern Denmark are now members of virtually every profession in the international community.

As a university, we play an important role in relation to the climate challenges. We create new knowledge through research and disseminate this knowledge through education and in collaboration with external parties. Further, SDU has tentatively set a goal of reducing the University’s CO2 emissions in 2030 by 57% compared to 2018. With this goal SDU meets the Danish government’s goal of a 70% reduction in CO2 emissions in 2030 compared to 1990. The work towards a more climate friendly SDU is expressed in the SDU Climate Plan running to 2030. https://www.sdu.dk/en/voresverdensmaal/klimaregnskab

Students and researchers at SDU are set to move the world in a more sustainable direction by creating the economic, social and environmental development laid down in the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the Executive Board of the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in June 2019 decided that these key goals were to become the focal point for SDU’s work as a university. The ongoing transformation is realized through many new initiatives. The basis for the transformation will be research and education. https://www.sdu.dk/en/voresverdensmaal

Untill June 2022 the SDU membership of UArctic only regarded The Department of Sociology, Environmental and Business Economics (SEBE) at the University of Southern Denmark. The Department is still an active partner of UArctic with several student and research activities and engagement in the thematic networks and plays a central role for SDU’s membership. For direct contact with SEBE regarding UArctic activities, please reach out directly to Professor Brooks Kaiser (baka@sam.sdu.dk).

Focus Areas

The overall strategic focus areas for SDU are:

  • Society
  • Talent
  • Future

The three strategic focus areas are elaborated below:

  • Society: SDU prioritizes cross-disciplinary collaboration for society and with society. Many challenges in our society now feature such complexity that it’s simply impossible for any single institution or company to deal with them using only their own resources. Tackling these challenges requires cross-disciplinary collaboration in which different specialist skills and capabilities can be dovetailed and brought into play effectively.
  • Talent: Several SDU courses feature special talent programmes for students with the skills and determination to make an extra effort. In these programmes, the students develop and extend those capabilities in a wide range of specialist activities and international competitions – covering everything from legal procedure to synthetic biology.
  • Future: SDU works to shift traditional boundaries and shape a better future in many different ways. The SDU campus covers virtually all scientific and humanities disciplines, enabling us to make sure that the research issues we focus on are appropriate to the society we live in – as it develops and changes – and that research results can be quickly tested and converted into practical, implementable results that benefit individual citizens as well as public welfare. One particular example of how we do this is the Danish Institute for Advanced Study, a research centre that aims to inspire and kickstart ground-breaking new ideas via effective meetings of minds in a world-class think-tank environment.
