The Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) in Tromso Norway seeks applicants for a postdoctoral position in atmospheric sciences, a PhD student position in atmospheric chemistry, and a PhD student position in snow-ice-atmosphere processes. The NPI is Norway's main institution for research, environmental management and monitoring, mapping and field work in the polar regions. The Institute is under the auspices of the Ministry of the Environment and is a contact and service body for national and international polar research.
Position Descriptions
2-year Postdoctoral Position: "Modelling Atmospheric Nitrogen Delivery"
The postdoctoral candidate will be responsible for constructing forward models of reactive nitrogen transport to Ny-Alesund, Svalbard.
Additional measurements for the development of the models will also be taken in the laboratory at Ny-Alesund. An important aspect of the project will be to conduct field experiments and to collect data during field campaigns in the Ny-Alesund area during the 2009 and 2010 winter/spring seasons. This person will work closely with the PhD students and is expected to act as a team leader. NPI seeks candidates with a PhD degree in atmospheric sciences or other relevant discipline.
Because the project will involve fieldwork in Svalbard, some polar experience is preferable.

3-year PhD Position: "Atmospheric Chemistry and Climatology"
The PhD candidate will focus on analysing air quality and climatology at the Zeppelin station in Ny-Alesund. An important aspect of the project will be to conduct field experiments and collect data during field campaigns in the Ny-Alesund area on Svalbard, during the 2009 and 2010 winter/spring seasons. NPI seeks candidates with a Masters degree in atmospheric sciences, chemistry, or geophysics. Candidates are sought who are strongly motivated and who have the ability to work independently with a positive attitude. Previous experience in polar areas will be an advantage. 3-year PhD position: "Nitrogen Dynamics in the Winter Snowpack"
The PhD candidate will focus on mapping the distribution of nitrogen in the snow pack in time and space. Strongly motivated candidates who have the ability to work independently and have a positive attitude are particularly sought. Previous experience in polar areas will be an advantage.
