Water is becoming increasingly important in circular economy, especially in arctic conditions. For practical applications, the measurements developed in laboratory conditions need to be modified to on-line use in challenging environmental conditions. The water and wastewater treatment should be adapted to changing weather and load conditions. The environmental load of industry is most efficiently handled within processes, especially with efficient water circulation. Reliable on-line water quality and flow monitoring with advanced data analytics is essential in this. Currently, environmental monitoring systems rely on fairly sparse measurements which are not sufficient in varying operating conditions.
The requirements of the water system automation can be analyzed as cyber physical systems: connections, conversion, cyber, cognition and configuration. Mobile communication and internet of things provide a feasible environment for the connection part. Data analytics can be used even for much wider datasets. Artificial intelligence and deep learning provide solutions for the cyber part to detect interesting situations. However, the domain expertise of water systems is not easy to combine with black box solutions.
The efficient automatic solutions require combinations of measurements, data analysis and domain expertise. Intelligent analyzer, or soft sensors, are the keys to the practical applications by providing solutions for the conversion phase. The indirect information from various data sources takes into account the varying operating conditions and uncertainties arising from the measurement arrangements. The interactions analyzed in the cyber phase enhance the information for the cognition phase and the solutions supported by the domain expertise go to the configuration.
