Climate Impacts Research Centre

We provide a platform for research, education and outreach in the Swedish arctic. We are based at the world class Abisko Scientific Research Station run by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat.

The Climate Impacts Research Centre, Department of Ecology and Environmental Sciences is a key Arctic research centre at Umeå University.

CIRC aims to develop, facilitate and coordinate research at Umeå University (UmU) on the effects of a changing climate in Arctic ecosystems. We will do this by providing infrastructure (offices, laboratories, field sites) that promotes high quality year-round research at UmU on climate effects in Arctic ecosystems. CIRC will initiate and coordinate cross-border innovative climate impact research at UmU that integrates terrestrial and aquatic Arctic environments. We will promote national and international research exchanges and interdisciplinary collaborations on climate effects on Arctic ecosystems. CIRC researchers will carry out systematic safety work to enable a safe research environment year-round in Arctic conditions. We will act as a knowledge node for teaching and education at UmU on climate effects in Arctic ecosystems. We will work to ensure that research is conducted in a sustainable manner and that negative effects on the climate are minimized. CIRC will ensure that scientific information at UmU about climate effects in Arctic ecosystems is disseminated across society.

The platform is based at the Abisko Scientific Research Station (ANS). Here ANS provides access to modern laboratory, classroom and conference facilities, instruments, technical capacity, long-term environmental and meteorlogical monitoring data (1913 to present), library, and an on-line collections and databases.

The research platform is available year-round. Regardless, research plans or other uses of the station must be approved in advance by the Abisko Scientific Research Station manager. Housing and lab space are especially limited during the summer field season, typically June to September. Other times of year, conferences held at the research station may limit the availability of housing.

All users must apply for permission to use the ANS facilities. Deadlines for summer applications is 31 March each year. This includes requests for housing. For more information about the Abisko Scientific Research Station visit their website.
