Umeå Marine Sciences Center at Umeå University
UMSC is a research platform in the sub-arctic zone adjacent to marine, river and lake environments with skilled research technicians.
The infrastructure at Umeå Marine Sciences Center consist of large laboratory spaces including four climate rooms. Halls are available for projects that require running temperature controlled seawater with experiment tanks ranging in size from small aquariums up to containers of one cubic meter. Research vessels provide access to field scale experimental systems. Ongoing long term ecological time series in internet based databases provides valuable background data. In addition UMSC offers mesocosm facilities, both indoor and outdoor. The indoor facility has a sophisticated temperature control system suited for projects that includes arctic topics. Freezers are installed on top of the mesocosms. This allow for air temperatures above the water surface down to -20 C enabling for projects that require ice. Furthermore, Eight channel LED-lamps can mimic spectra and intensity of the sun in three different ways using time channels. Any part of the globe can be simulated using a global simulation module.
Accommodation for up to 20 people is provided at a nearby hostel.
