Finland’s Ministry of Education is continuing its support for the University of the Arctic (UArctic) by providing funding to the International Secretariat until 2009.

The announcement was made after the University of Lapland, the host organization for UArctic’s International Secretariat, had its negotiations with the ministry this week. During the negotiations, the funding for the Secretariat was secured at a stable level for the next three years.

“Long-term security on core funding makes it easier for us to plan our activities,” says Outi Snellman, UArctic’s Deputy Director and Head of the International Secretariat. “UArctic really has benefited from the consistent support of the Finnish Ministry of Education and the University of Lapland to the Secretariat.”

The ministry has been a strong supporter of UArctic since its inception through significant funding contributions to the Feasibility Study and afterwards. Since UArctic’s launch in 2001, the ministry has continued to provide funding for the International Secretariat as well as various UArctic programs.

“We hope that all Arctic countries will be able to follow suit with long-term funding to UArctic,” says Snellman.
