The celebration events will be held in the city of Tromso, which is home to both the world's northernmost university and the Norwegian Polar Institute.

The week-long celebrations, on the theme of Melting Ice - a Hot Topic?, will include events such as an opening ceremony, street celebrations, a youth film festival and an international conference.

The events of World Environment Day will be organized in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Norway will also use this occasion to mark that 2007 is the start of the International Polar Year (IPY), which will have significant impact on the spread of knowledge about the polar regions.

The World Environment Day will be celebrated in over 100 countries. By choosing Melting Ice: a Hot Topic as a theme, UNEP wanted to put the focus on the effects that climate change is having on polar ecosystems and communities, and the ensuing consequences around the world.
