The overall aim of the conference, organized by the LANDSCAPE LAB project, is to present and discuss issues related to sustainable tourism. Both scientific and practical approaches will be discussed in the interdisciplinary conference. The event will welcome researchers, managers, planners, consultants, entrepreneurs, authorities, teachers and students, among others
The four main themes of the conference are: - Ecologically, Culturally, and Visually Sustainable Urban Structures in Tourist Destinations; - Scope and Types of Environmental Impacts of the Tourist Destinations; - Social and Cultural Sustainability of Tourist Destinations; and - Hardy Plants for Landscaping and Restoration in Northern Tourist Destinations. Abstracts for oral and poster presentations are being accepted until Friday, 23 March 2007. Instructions for formatting and submitting abstracts are available at: http://www.arcticcentre.org/contentparser.asp?deptid=20057 The LANDSCAPE LAB project, co-ordinated by the University of Lapland's Arctic Centre, found its basis in the increasing need for knowledge about the impacts of growing tourism on nature, culture and local communities.
The project will lead to the development and presentation of methods using which tourism operators can estimate and promote the sustainability of tourism.
