Welcome greetings from the President of Finland

Unofficial English Translation – For release 8.6.2011

I would like to wish the University of the Arctic warm greetings for its anniversary celebrations, which take place in Rovaniemi, which also gives its name to the process that began there 20 years ago with the Arctic Environmental Protection Strategy (i.e., The Rovaniemi Process).

The most important thing we can do today is to reach a new balance between our own desires and the preservation of the natural environment. This also includes biodiversity. This is essential to our lives.

In my duties as the co-chair of the UN Panel on Sustainable Development I wish to encourage you by saying that sustainable development is indeed possible. Economic growth is still welcomed, but it must respect the limits of our planet. There is already plenty of the new technology that we need and more can be developed. Economic growth must also be done in accordance with social justice. For this change to happen political decision-makers as well as private individuals must have the will to live responsibly.

Today the University of the Arctic turns ten years old. With respect to the theme of the seminar, this is only a short time. These ten years have occurred however during a time when humanity has been forced to confront significant new global challenges.

The University of the Arctic has raised the North's profile in this global discourse. Northerners have the right to participate in the decisions that affect their lives and the right to quality of life. I wish the University of the Arctic success for the future and the courage to bring difficult questions forward for discussion among the general public.

Tasavallan presidentin tervehdys

Toivotan University of the Arcticille lämpimästi onnea juhlapäivänä, jonka vietätte osuvasti nimenomaan Rovaniemellä, joka antoi nimensä myös 20 vuotta sitten käynnistyneelle Arktisten alueiden ympäristöprosessille (Rovaniemi- prosessille).

Tärkeintä, mitä voimme tänään tehdä on aikaansaada uusi tasapaino omien toiveittemme ja koko luonnon hyvinvoinnille. Siihen liittyy myös luonnon monimuotoisuus. Se on meidän elämämme ehto.

Tehtävässäni YK:n kestävän kehityksen paneelin rinnakkaispuheenjohtajana haluan kannustaa teitä sanomalla, että kestävä kehitys on mahdollista. Taloudellinen kasvu on edelleen tervetullutta, mutta sen on otettava huomioon planeettamme rajat. Tarvittavaa uutta teknologiaa on jo runsain mitoin olemassa ja uutta voidaan kehittää. Taloudellisen kasvun tulee olla myös sosiaalisesti oikeudenmukaista. Muutos edellyttää sekä poliittisten päättäjien mutta myös yksittäisten ihmisten tahtoa elää vastuunsa tuntien.

University of the Arctic täyttää tänään kymmenen vuotta. Seminaarin teemaa ajatellen tämä on lyhyt hetki. Tämä kymmenen vuotta sijoittuu kuitenkin aikaan, jolloin ihmiskunta on joutunut heräämään rajulla tavalla uusiin globaleihin haasteisiin.

University of the Arctic on tuonut esiin pohjoisten alueiden roolin globaaliin keskusteluun. Pohjoisen ihmisillä oikeus osallistua omaa elämäänsä koskeviin päätöksiin ja oikeus saada hyvinvointia elämäänsä. Haluan toivottaa University of the Arcticille menestystä tulevaan ja rohkeutta nostaa esiin vaikeita kysymyksiä yleiseen yhteiskunnalliseen keskusteluun.
