The successful applicant will be part of the Arctic ABC
(http://www.mare-incognitum.no) project, the main goal of which is to determine ecosystem consequences of the ongoing reduction in Arctic sea ice. The applicant is expected to develop a PhD project that relates to Arctic sea ice ecology. Topics may include but are not limited to the temporal and spatial variability of biota, life histories and evolutionary ecology of sea ice-associated biota, food web interactions, and links to relevant environmental conditions. Arctic field work as well as splitting time between the University of Tromsø and the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) is expected. The appointment is for a period of four years. The position will be assigned teaching duties.

A Master of Science degree in Biology, Ecology, Marine Biology, Marine Science, Environmental Science or a related area is required. A background in marine biology, ecological theory and/or biological oceanography as well as experience with fieldwork, experimental work, and oceanographic sampling techniques is beneficial. Knowledge of basic relevant lab, analytical and statistical and quantitative methods are also desirable. UiT is looking for a bright and highly motivated individual who can work independently yet function in the ABC team and in teaching settings.
