The seminar was organized within the range of events, timed to coincide with the international forum “Artic – territory of dialogue” on the initiative of the UArctic members: Northern (Arctic) Federal University and Korea Maritime Institute. Mr. Young-jun Kim, the Ambassador for Arctic Affairs from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea addressed the audience with an opening speech.
“Korea is interested in joint scientific research, especially concerning climate change in the Arctic region and cooperation in the field of ship building and exploration of the Northern Sea Route” – emphasized the representative of the Korean delegation.
Among the participants of the seminar were the specialists from the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies, Korean Polar Research Institute, Association of oil and gas suppliers “Sozvezdie”, Northern Shipping Company and etc. Not only researchers and authorities but business community as well expressed interest towards the discussion.
Experts have discussed the prospects of developing the Northern Sea Route, scientific-technical cooperation in the field of shipbuilding and shipping for the exploration of the Arctic region. The problems of the high latitude area are complex, so the more experts participate in the discussion, the better it is for developing solutions.
The seminar is to be followed-up by new meetings in South Korea.
