Project aim and partners
The UArctic Thematic Network Digital North: Three-Dimensional Technologies and Arctic Education explores how emergent digital tools, including three-dimensional modeling, can support locally articulated desires in the Sámi homelands.
The project was made possible with UArctic-funding from UiT The Arctic University of Norway, and is currently a cooperation between the University of Maine, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Sámi Education Institute in Finland, the Sámi Museum in Karasjok, and Sámi University of Applied Sciences.
Project results
The funding facilitated the creation of the Thematic Network titled Digital North: Three-Dimensional Technologies and Arctic Education, a group that spans the academy, museums, and craft workshops, and incorporates perspectives and expertise from institutions from Sápmi to the United States.
Through the project period, the group developed digital content for museum and classroom education in Sámi contexts, alongside the plans for a new course integrating three-dimensional modeling as a tool to teach about and support craft making. Project contributors learned to use these tools in Arctic contexts, and to develop these resources through remote collaboration.
