This IPA Regional Conference on Permafrost aims at covering all relevant aspects of permafrost research, engineering and outreach on a global and regional level in a changing world. This call aims to promote the interaction amongst researchers as well as stakeholders, socio-economic, political and cultural actors, commonly engaged to address the societal challenges of permafrost in a warming world.

Now, we are opening the call for session proposals, which can be submitted until April 20, 2022.

Each session can be organized by two or three co-conveners (i.e. those sending the session proposal). We encourage international and gender balanced convener boards. At least, one convener should be a member of the Permafrost Young Researchers Network (PYRN). PYRN conveners are students or young researchers within six years after completion of their doctoral thesis. However, the board of a given session cannot be composed by students and their respective or former supervisors. The conveners will be responsible for the selection of abstracts and for the organization of oral or poster presentations.

Please send by e-mail to eucop62023[at]gmail.com the following information:

  • Session title
  • Names, affiliations and emails of the conveners
  • Summary (10-15 lines)

Inspired on the conference main theme “Permafrost in a changing world” and the research developments exposed during the last permafrost conferences, the following general themes denote the diversity of research to be discussed in the conference:

Alpine permafrost - Circumpolar permafrost - Permafrost paleoenvironments - Periglacial geomorphology - Infra-periglacial geomorphology - Forest/ice/snow cover on permafrost - Permafrost biogeochemistry - Permafrost microbiology - Permafrost and ecosystems changes - Biodiversity in permafrost landscapes - Fire and permafrost dynamics - Critical zone - Permafrost and climate change - Carbon cycling and climate feedbacks - In-situ and remote observation techniques and programs - Modeling - Planetary permafrost - Natural hazards - Risks on permafrost-affected slopes - Foundation engineering and infrastructure on permafrost - History of permafrost engineering and research - Socioeconomic and cultural dynamics - Permafrost and planetary health - Education and outreach.

Those themes are, by no means, restrictive and we especially wish to favour a transdisciplinary, holistic and systemic vision of the questions that the permafrost community faces. Following the ISC/LOC decision, we will communicate the accepted sessions by May 20, 2022. The decision will be based on the inherent scientific interest and quality of the session proposal, the potential to attract participants, the thematic overlap and the number of available slots at the conference.

The call for abstracts for the accepted sessions will be open from September until December 2022. After that date, depending on the number of abstracts submitted to each session, the ISC/LOC may propose to merge, modify or cancel sessions.

We are looking forward to receiving your session proposals for the EUCOP-6.
