NEW EXTENDED DEADLINE: My Northern Project call for Nordic PhD proposals for Arctic Circle Assembly AND Additional call

Both calls´ deadlines have been extended and are open until August 26, 2022 to PhD students from UArctic Nordic member institutions working in the field of northern or Arctic research AND one PhD student from a UArctic member institution outside the Nordic countries or Québec.

Call for Nordic member institutions

The goal is to identify five Nordic (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Greenland, Faroe Islands and Iceland) finalists that UArctic will select to represent UArctic at the international science popularization contest during the Arctic Circle Assembly held in Reykjavik  (13-16 Oct 2022 in Reykjavik, Iceland).

UArctic will grant selected 5 students each 1300€, which can be used for airfare, accommodation, and participation fee during the Arctic Circle Assembly.

PhD students from UArctic Nordic member institutions are eligible to apply. Another six finalists representing Québec, Canada, will also be present in Reykjavik. Together the 12 finalists will present their northern research project in five minutes on the joint day of UArctic and the Arctic Circle. The language of the presentations and proposals is English.

To apply:
Please send the following attachments to the UArctic International Secretariat (secretariat@uarctic.org) by August 26, 2022.

  • Cover letter with the applicant’s name, name of sending UArctic member university, name of the PhD topic, name of supervisor, expected year of graduation
  • Motivation letter
  • Letter of recommendation from the Ph.D thesis supervisor
  • a black and white headshot (square pictures are preferred) and a short bio (100 – 150 words)
  • 300-word abstract of the topic/presentation

UArctic will make the selection  (including the other mandatory attachments) received by the deadline.

UArctic aims at an overall balance with the group’s selection on areas of northern research, geographical distribution, (participant from each Nordic country) as well as gender balance. A committee consisting of UArctic’s leadership will select the six finalists who will be invited to present their project in Iceland. UArctic strongly encourages students with an indigenous background to apply.

Additional Call for member institution outside the Nordic countries or Québec

To complement the already launched calls, the goal is to identify one additional PhD student working in the field of northern or Arctic research who is currently studying at a small northern institution. The selected student will represent UArctic at the international science popularization contest during the Arctic Circle Assembly held in Reykjavik, Iceland on October 13-16 2022. Two other calls are ongoing to identify 10-12 participants from Québec, Canada and the Nordics. Together the finalists will present their northern research project in five minutes at a dedicated session at the Arctic Circle Assembly. The language of the presentations and proposals is English.

PhD students from UArctic member institutions outside the Nordic countries and Québec are eligible to apply. The call is targeted to applicants from small northern institutions. Also students from non-Arctic member institutions are eligible to apply. Depending on their location, UArctic will grant the selected student up to 2000€, which can be used for airfare, accommodation, and participation fee during the Arctic Circle Assembly.

Due to collaboration between UArctic and Russian institutions being paused, PhD students from Russian institutions are not eligible to apply in this call.
