Six new Thematic Networks were approved by the Council of UArtic in their 19th meeting held September 2016 in St. Petersburg.

Science Ministers from 25 governments and the European Union gathered at the White House to discuss Arctic research priorities and sign a Joint Statement on increased international collaboration on Arctic science and inclusion of Indigenous peoples in understanding and responding to changes in the Arctic.

Nord University annouced two PhD positions connected with a new Nordic Center of Excellence project – CLINF.

The University of Lapland has received a substantial donation as part of its fundraising campaign from the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. The donation is one of the largest single donations of the current campaign, and it is targeted towards Arctic education and research.

Northern (Arctic) Federal University will host UArctic Open Days, November 10-11, 2016. Representatives of Russian UArctic members will participate in workshops on Thematic Networks activities and cooperation as well as projects implementation. 

In the end of July from the port of Murmansk (Russia) "The Alter Ego" yacht started the expedition "Open Ocean: Arctic Archipelago - 2016" to North-East protected areas of the Barents Sea.

Northern (Arctic) Federal University held autumn school "Model Arctic Council" (MAC) on September 19-23, 2016. In 2014, a pilot project was carried out on the basis of the same university. This year students themselves organized the autumn school.
