“Atlantic Canada is quickly becoming a centre of excellence for all things related to the ocean — from applying new management processes that enable the fishing and aquaculture industry to help feed a hungry world, to creating new businesses through investments in ocean tech,” says Gita Narayan, OFI’s Transnational Program Coordinator. “To help fuel this growth, we need to develop top research talent — training and developing future ocean leaders who will help us generate economic benefits from the ocean in a way that’s also responsible to our environment.”
OFI's Visiting Fellows program provides opportunities for ocean experts to study and work at Dalhousie or Memorial University, while also enabling researchers based at those universities to gain experience with internationally-based research projects.
“There are enormous benefits to be gained through a program that provides both outgoing and incoming options,” said Gita. “From a recruitment perspective, we have the opportunity to ‘test drive’ new talent and show them what Atlantic Canada has to offer. From a retention perspective, we send a strong message that DAL is investing in the career development of its existing researchers.”
Visiting International Fellowship
This program provides a forum for scholarly knowledge exchange and collaboration among research colleagues, with the intent of producing a research outcome that positively impacts how we use and manage the ocean.
The Visiting International Fellowship will be awarded to highly-qualified researchers who intend to conduct innovative, full-time, interdisciplinary and collaborative research. Successful candidates will spend their research stay at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia or at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland. This program supports both the continuation of research within ongoing research priority areas and/or the development of new, complementary ocean initiatives aligned with OFI’s research priorities.
Applications must be submitted to OFI no later than Monday, December 31, 2018. Applicants who are accepted to the program should plan to begin their Fellowship within three months from the acceptance of their offer letter. OFI anticipates awarding up to ten Visiting International Fellows annually, budget permitting. Future calls will be made on an annual basis.

Canadian-International Visiting Fellowship
This transnational program provides a forum for scholarly knowledge exchange and collaboration, with the clear intent of producing a research outcome with impact (i.e. research proposal, publication or report). This program supports both the continuation of research within ongoing research priority areas and/or the development of new, complementary ocean initiatives aligned with OFI’s research priorities.
Canadian-International Visiting Fellowships will be awarded to highly-qualified researchers from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia or at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, who intend to conduct innovative, full-time, interdisciplinary and collaborative research at an international institution, with priority given to one of OFI's partner institutions.
By facilitating scholarly visits of Canadian-based OFI researchers to an international partner institution, we foster knowledge exchange, collaboration, and forge strong linkages within the global research community.
