Three UArctic chairs are actively involved in the project, Roland Kallenborn, Arja Rautio, and Bing Chen.
The kick-off meeting of the ArcSolution project was held between 22-25th of October, 2024 at Nord University, Bodø, Norway. The meeting officially initiated the research which aims to develop new trans-disciplinary strategies for mitigation and remediation of pollutant sources in the Arctic. For this ambitious goal, OneHealth principles will be applied.
The Arctic is facing rapid changes due to climate change and pollution from both local and distant sources, impacting human life, wildlife, and ecosystems. ArcSolution takes a holistic “One Health” approach to address these challenges, integrating local and Indigenous knowledge with scientific research across four Arctic locations: Northern Finland, Svalbard, Northern Norway, and Greenland.
The research will focus on key pollutants like mercury, plastics, and pathogens, studying their effects on ecosystems and human health. Together with local communities, we develop solutions in circular economy, technology, and chemicals management. Our findings are shared with schools, policymakers, industry, and the scientific community to support sustainable actions for a healthier Arctic.
The consortium behind ArcSolution is a highly qualified and diverse team, consisting of 14 partners from 8 different nations, from a range of geographic regions, including the Arctic and other key areas, including the UArctic members Nord University, University of Oulu, Aarhus University, Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Ilisimatusarfik / University of Greenland, Alfred Wegener Institut, Memorial University of Newfoundland.
