Education, Equity and Inclusion – Teaching and Learning for a Sustainable North is a continuation for the book “Including the North: a comparative study of the policies on inclusion and equity in the Circumpolar North” published in 2019. The first book highlighted the policies of inclusion and equity in education in national and regional contexts in the arctic. The new publication provides more in-depth view of the provision of education in the arctic, focusing on challenges and innovations in meeting the needs of diverse learners in remote and rapidly changing contexts.
The book offers different viewpoints of education across the north and provides lessons that can be learned from northern regions. While many texts address issues of equity, inclusion and diversity in education, they focus mainly on the global south. The purpose of the book is to present ways to create an education system that allows students to grow up grounded in their own cultures and languages and to be able to navigate the broader world.
"Based on experience, a book like this is very much needed in the education field. The book is an eye-opener for recognising the uniqueness and, on the other hand, the sameness of people", the editors summarise.
The book gives a robust and unique set of insights into equity and inclusion issues in education across the circumpolar north with 16 chapters in total and 35 authors from 12 countries and 17 institutions. The chapters are structured around two main themes 1) Supporting Teachers for Diversity and Inclusion in the Classroom including consideration of language and identity issues, 2) Engendering community solutions to structural and geographical challenges in education in the circumpolar north.
"The book was created in cooperation with the UArctic Thematic Network Teacher Education for Social Justice and Diversity, and it is an impressive example of the extensive expertise existing in the network", the editors say.
The book is an output of the project Enhancing Equity and Inclusion in Education in Circumpolar North (EICN), which is part of the UArctic Thematic Network on Teacher Education for Social Justice and Diversity activities. The project is funded by UArctic project funding for Networking Activities on Arctic Research and Education, allocated by Danish Agency for Science and Higher Education (DAFSHE) and managed by UArctic International Secretariat.
The project is led by Ilisimatusarfik / University of Greenland and coordinated by University of Lapland. The project partners are Copenhagen Business School, Leeds Beckett University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, University of Alaska Anchorage, University of Iceland and the University of the Faroe Islands.
